“On Highway 1 With Nowhere To Go” Now Available in Awe Shop

Celebrating nearly 2 years of musical collaboration, Awe is proud to release their debut album! Released on Friday, September 13, 2024, “On Highway 1 With Nowhere To Go” marks the band’s first concept album: a story about two strangers who meet and fall in love in a world on the brink of collapse.

Plans for a new live band are well under way and music video collaborations are being discussed as well.

Q: What's the first song you learned to play on gu

Q: What's the first song you learned to play on guitar?

A: "The first song that I learned on guitar was 'The House of the Rising Sun'. Dad said everyone learns that song. I remember thinking, 'how can anyone play this? It's so many chords!' My dad knew what he was doing choosing that song. So, I tinkered around with that for several months. Playing and singing. Maybe tried to create some chords of my own, too. This is when I was about 12. One day, my dad asked me if I wanted to start guitar lessons. I shrugged and said 'sure'. I wasn't sure what this music thing meant to me at this point. So, he set me up at a small guitar shop in Savage, Minnesota called LaVonne Music, which is where I met a man named Michael. Michael is really the only person who ever formerly taught me anything on guitar. He had very long, white hair and wore fancy blouses and accoutrements. That was another first for me. I really liked Michael a lot, mostly because he was so soft spoken and very nice to me. Great man. I remember our first lesson together: he said "hi, Robert", sat down, plugged in his Fender Strat and started playing Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Eric Clapton for me. It was like the most exciting thing ever to me. I'd even say I was intimidated. How could someone so calm play like that, you know? My feelings about music changed after that. Come to think of it, this may have been the first time I watched someone play a guitar solo live. Needless to say, after that lesson, I wasn't playing 'The House of the Rising Sun' anymore."

"I needed a song that setup the premise of the album's story line. So, I began to write a song told from the perspective of the 'Invisible Man', a loner who lives near the beach. He spots this beautiful woman dancing alone in a shore break in the ocean. It's high tide. This imagery triggers intense feelings of connection and longing within him. She is a teacher. Dedicated to her work just to feel alive. An academic country woman with a .357 mind. With a face as light as a swan's feather. And hair that burns like a wistful ember. She fell out of place and time with everyone she knew back east. And even further east from that. But I kept thinking to myself: why would she stray so far from home? So, I had to come up with some idea about what could shake her out of her comfort zone. And that's when the apocalyptic story line came to me. This sort of terrible event that wiped out the markets, crops - that sort of thing. And I just loved how this contrasted with both the idyllic coastal beach setting and all the quirky characters on the album. Anyways. These events lead her to the shores of southern California. Not to pursue beauty or love. But to survive. Following the crowd. Like the 'Invisible Man', she is a loner. She is his lonely dancer."

"I just wanted to write an honest love song. So, I went inward a little bit. The song tells the story of a relationship in strife and selfish desperation. Obsession. Carnal longing. How someone could be in a relationship and yet still feel so alone. Unheard even. I saw these undertones of 'Kenny & Dolly' and The Pogue's 'Fairytale of New York'. Tom Waits and Bette Midler, too. Originally, it was a song about a jewelry vendor who professes his love to a 'lady of the night' in Venice Beach. You know, a guy of many names with only one thing on his mind. But as time went on, it became clear to me that this song was about a moment of clarity between the invisible man and lonely dancer. Their meeting was like feeling a deluge of wonder and joy on a blue moon. Like seeing a lady spontaneously combust from her cigarette. There was so much passion. But it happened before they had a chance to think about how they actually felt about each other. So, now they're thinking. Realizing. Are we going to stick with this thing? Because if we are, it's going to be a commitment. And maybe they weren't prepared for that. So, the invisible man sings about the things she does, and the way it makes him feel. Good and bad. I heard this lovely call and response happening between them. I don't see it as a breakup song. It's a real-life love song."

On September 7, 2023, Slattery took to writing the song "Nomad". The following excerpt would become the premise for the song. It was inspired by conversations that Slattery overhead from transient people in LA. The song is about a man who becomes homeless after a bad break up:

"She could read every thought, you know. Every secret. She had a fairy tale pride and a voice that sounded like a wave crashing on Broadway. A swagger as tall as vine. My ocean girl. And we tell jokes about some singer in New Orleans. And the delivery man slips another dollar through the door. And she won't touch me. What'd you say, baby? I just showered. But she holds her peace. I was always 7 minutes behind. 7 minutes from somewhere. It drove me mad, you know. I always checked that damn clock, and it was always 7 minutes behind. If that clock ever gets fixed, tell her to come back to me."
